Houston win 12th crown: But where is the Wes Cup -- fans ask?

Posted by: Newswire, 2020-08-15, 225 Views

Another season, another Houston D1 crown. However, this most recent title is the club's first under the newly merged Americas banner. The competition is clearly the toughest it has been in years, with elite clubs like Brasilia, San Juan, Las Vegas and Tuscon all competing for the top spots. So, the crown has delivered some validation for Houston as still the dominant Americas champion.

Critics will point to the fact that both Las Vegas and San Juan were in rebuild mode this season, while Brasilia remains somewhat misbalanced as a second team. But Houston's superiority this season was convincing enough that they will go in as favourites into the new season.

However, the fans are calling for a different trophy. According to a poll in the Houston metropolitan area, some 79% of fans are demanding a Wes Cup trophy in the next few seasons. The club has been in numerous semis and QFs over the past 10 seasons, but the final continues to elude them. Now, with the dominance of Pristina waning, there is a feeling that Houston should take advantage in an otherwise equal landscape. The club has two Wes Cups to its name, and the fans are thirsty for a third to cement themselves as among the greatest dynasties in Wes history.
